Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, Luis Suarez, has revealed his plan to hang up his international boots after the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay on Friday.

The 37-year-old forward, who has been a stalwart for La Celeste since his debut in 2007, announced his decision at a press conference on Monday.

Suarez’s illustrious international career spans 17 years, with 142 appearances and 69 goals to his name, including a memorable triumph in the 2011 Copa America.

Suarez’s decision to retire from international football comes as he approaches the twilight of his career, acknowledging the challenges of reaching the next World Cup.

“I’m comforted knowing I can retire on my own terms, rather than being forced out by injuries or a decline in form,” he explained.

Suarez reflected on his journey, saying, “It wasn’t an easy decision, but I’m at peace knowing I gave my all until the very end.”

The former Liverpool player is not only a household name in Uruguay and Europe but also infamous in Africa for his controversial handball against Ghana in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals.

Suarez went on to make three more World Cup appearances, with his last outing in Qatar in 2022.

As he bids farewell to international football, Suarez leaves behind a legacy as one of the most prolific goal-scorers in international history.
