The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has officially ended its strike, which was initiated to protest the ongoing illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey,” that are causing severe environmental damage in Ghana.

UTAG members halted their duties earlier this month to pressure the government into taking stronger action against galamsey. In a statement on October 29, 2024, the Association affirmed its ongoing commitment to combatting illegal mining to protect the environment.

UTAG acknowledged the decision to suspend the strike was challenging, recognizing the impact on students and the public, despite its alignment with societal interests.

The leadership put the decision to a vote, ultimately choosing to resume work and explore other legal avenues to address their concerns over illegal mining.

“Our campaign against galamsey stems from its harmful effects on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and communities that rely on these resources. UTAG remains steadfast in its mission to protect natural resources,” the statement read.

The statement also expressed that while suspending the strike may disappoint some, UTAG intends to continue its advocacy through alternative legal channels in the interest of the public and students.
