Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he has initiated discussions with the club regarding a new contract.

The 33-year-old defender, who joined Anfield in January 2018, is set to see his current deal expire at the end of the season.

“Discussions are ongoing, and we will see what happens in the future,” said the Netherlands international. “My full focus is on Liverpool and winning the upcoming matches or nothing else. I have no idea what the future holds, but discussions have started.”

Alongside Van Dijk, England international Trent Alexander-Arnold and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah are also facing contract expirations next summer, though there have been no updates on their situations.

Liverpool signed Van Dijk from Southampton for £75 million, and he has played a crucial role in the club’s success, contributing to victories in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

Under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot, Van Dijk has helped Liverpool secure the top position in the Premier League this season, achieving seven wins from their first eight matches.

“I feel good, both physically and mentally, and I’m enjoying myself,” added Van Dijk following Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea. “When it’s time to make a decision, you’ll know.”

This season, Van Dijk has been instrumental in helping Liverpool maintain an impressive defensive record, conceding only three goals. “At the start of the season, we looked at the numbers regarding our defensive structure in the final third. That’s definitely changed,” he explained.

“It’s not just about the back line and the goalkeeper; it’s a team effort. While the centre-backs and goalkeepers get credit for the clean sheets, it’s about the entire team working together.”

The contract statuses of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Salah have become a growing concern for Liverpool fans this season.

Van Dijk’s confirmation of ongoing talks will likely be a relief for supporters, suggesting that at least one key player is on track to remain with the club, although he has left some uncertainty about his future.

Van Dijk’s influence at Liverpool is undeniable. This season, he has been pivotal, contributing to six clean sheets in the ten games he has played. Liverpool manager Slot praised his captain’s impact, stating, “What you may not see is how crucial he is during training. He’s always vocal, bringing energy and quality to our sessions. He’s our leader.”
