Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has expressed her condolences to the families of six young Ghanaian women who tragically lost their lives during a military recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on Thursday, November 12, 2025.
The unfortunate incident occurred when a stampede broke out among Thousands of applicants seeking to join the Ghana Armed Forces, leaving six dead and several others in critical conditions.
In a press statement dated Wednesday, November 12, and signed by her Press Secretary, Ama Pratt, the Vice President described the event as “deeply heartbreaking” and extended her sympathies to all those affected by the tragedy.
“The Vice President of the Republic, H.E Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has received with profound sorrow the tragic news of the stampede that claimed the lives of six young Ghanaians, all aspiring to join the Ghana Armed Forces, and left many others injured.
She extends her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy and full recovery to those affected.
The Vice President calls on all Ghanaians to remain calm as authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take urgent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang further stressed the need for comprehensive safety measures at all national recruitment, to safeguard lives and prevent a recurrence of such unfortunate incidents.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the suspension of the Military recruitment in Accra, whereas the Acting Defense Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured a thorough probe of the incident.
The devastating event has sparked nationwide grief and concern, with many calling for reforms in how large-scale recruitment exercises are conducted.
