The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced its intention to start discussions with key stakeholders regarding the potential controlled release of water from the Akosombo Dam.

In a notice signed by Ing. Ken Arthur, VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, over 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and local assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas, have been invited to participate.

The notice highlights that these engagements are a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining the dam’s structural integrity and ensuring the safety of communities downstream.

It states, “VRA intends to commence discussions regarding the potential controlled spillage of water from the Akosombo Dam. This measure is critical to safeguarding the dam’s structure and protecting our communities.”

Additionally, the notice outlines the objectives of these engagements, which include assessing potential implications, implementing mitigation strategies, and planning effective communication strategies for the public.

“We look forward to collaborating with you and your team to address potential impacts, implement mitigation measures, and communicate effectively,” the notice concludes.

VRA commenced controlled spilling of excess water from the Akosombo Dam on September 15, 2023, leading to significant flooding in the surrounding Lower Volta area.

The spilling continued until October 30, 2023, when VRA announced its conclusion. According to government reports, the flooding affected over 88,000 people and more than 5,000 homes.

In response, Citi FM and Channel One TV mobilized their audiences to establish resettlement and health centers for those affected.

The government also pledged a GH¢220 million compensation package for flood victims. During his 67th Independence Day speech in Koforidua on March 6, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo mentioned that GH¢80 million had been disbursed for this purpose.

However, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, disputed the president’s claim regarding the disbursement of GH¢80 million.
