The Senior Staff Association of the Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced that its leadership will meet on Friday, October 25, to discuss the suspension of four bills proposing mergers within the energy sector.

The Ministry of Energy has requested Parliament to suspend its deliberations on these bills, which include a plan to merge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and establish a new Thermal Power Authority using the VRA’s thermal plants.

This move follows strong opposition from stakeholders, particularly the VRA, prompting the ministry to seek further consultations before proceeding with the bill.

Speaking to Citi News, Theophilus Tetteh, Chairman of the VRA Senior Staff Association, reaffirmed the group’s stance for a complete withdrawal of the bills. He stated, “We’ve received a copy from our Chief Executive, and in good corporate governance, all the unions within VRA will meet on Friday to review the letter and issue a response.”

Tetteh further emphasized that the association continues to believe the bill will not benefit the nation.

Meanwhile, Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security, urged the government to address existing gaps within the institutions before moving forward with any merger plans.
