1) Leader of the Burkina Faso coup Damiba sworn in as President
Burkina Faso’s military leader Paul-Henri Damiba was sworn in as president on Wednesday, weeks after leading a successful coup, and he promised to deal with the mounting insecurity that helped oust his predecessor.
The lieutenant colonel, who had little public profile before he appeared on state television last month to announce the takeover, opened his speech at Wednesday’s ceremony with a moment of silence for the civilians and soldiers killed in the fight against militants.
2) School placements released for 2021 BECE candidates
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the release of senior high school placements for candidates who sat the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).
According to the GES, the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat has made the choices of schools available through bulk SMS and online for verification.
3) Volkswagen expects chip shortage to ease later in 2022
German carmaker Volkswagen expects a continued hit from a shortage of semiconductors this year, although it should be able to ramp up production in the second half of the year, Chief Executive Herbert Diess said on Wednesday.
“The supply situation is getting better, but even in 2022 we will not be able to build all the cars we could sell. But we see opportunities for further production increases, especially in the second half of the year,” Diess said in a speech.
4) BTS to hit the stage in South Korea for first time since COVID began
South Korean boy band BTS are to put on their first shows for their home fans since the coronavirus pandemic began, with three concerts in the capital, Seoul, next month, their agency said on Wednesday.
The concerts, part of their “Permission to Dance on Stage” tour that has been disrupted by the pandemic, will be at Seoul’s Olympic Stadium on March 10, 12 and 13, and will also be live streamed, Bit Hit Music said.
5) Giannis Antetokounmpo scores 50 in Bucks’ win
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a season-high 50 points as the Milwaukee Bucks earned a 128-119 win over the visiting Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night to complete a four-game sweep of the season series.
Antetokounmpo added 14 rebounds on 17-for-21 shooting to help the Bucks snap a two-game losing streak. Khris Middleton contributed 19 points and eight assists, and Jrue Holiday notched 14 points and eight assists. Reserve Lindell Wigginton had a career-high 12 points.
