Here is the daily news summary for Tuesday, 22nd of March 2022.

1) Massive shock gripped spectators as ‘crippled’ street beggars stood up and fled to escape arrest

Drama, shock and disbelief filled Thika town, Kenya during a mop-up exercise of physically challenged street beggars as 38 of them ran for their dear lives before they were arrested by the police.

Some who have been known to crawl in the streets or to be permanently on wheelchairs ran faster than the police and disappeared in the streets. They arrested beggars said through begging, they have so far had huge investments in businesses and real estate and own maisonettes.

2) Man shoots and kills wife at close range after wife’s divorce threat

A 64-year-old resident of Anyini in the Ashanti Region is in the grips of the police for allegedly killing his 44-year-old wife. Kwaku Obeng, according to a report, shot and killed Sophia Akosua Boahemaa at close range after she had threatened to divorce him.

The incident, as confirmed by the Jacobu District Police Commander, Supt. Iddrisu Abdullai, occurred on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at about 3 pm. The police upon receiving a report of the alleged shooting incident arrived at the scene where they found the lifeless body of the deceased.

3) Bitcoin climbs to highest in almost three weeks

Bitcoin climbed on Tuesday to its highest in almost three weeks, adding to its gains since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, pulling up smaller digital coins such as ether.

Bitcoin climbed as much as 5.6% to $43,337, its highest since Mar. 3, and was last up 3.6%. Ether , the second largest digital coin, climbed as much as 5.4% to its highest since Feb. 17.

4) Wife of Ukrainian politician caught at border trying to flee with $28m, €1.3m cash

The glamorous wife of a prominent Ukrainian tycoon and politician was caught at a border with ‘ £22 million while crossing into the EU’, it is alleged. The woman, Anastasia Kotvitska, had taken the cash through a refugee border crossing into the European Union while fleeing the war-torn country.  

Kotvitsky, once Ukraine’s wealthiest MP, said his wife was leaving the country to give birth, but denied reports she was carrying $28 million and 1.3 million euros. A criminal case has been opened into a failure by Anastasia Kotvitska to declare the removal of the large sum from the war-ravaged country, say reports in Kyiv.

5) [2022 World Cup playoff] Ghana squad for Nigeria showdown finally released

Ghana have finally released their 27-man squad for this week’s showdown against Nigeria in the decisive 2022 World Cup playoff with four debutantes Felix Afena-Gyan, Denis Odoi Dennis Korsah and Elisha Owusu named for the two matches against Super Eagles.

Two key players Mohammed Kudus and goalkeeper Richard Ofori who missed the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon two months ago are back in the squad for the two-legged matches to be played in Kumasi and Abuja over the next one week.
