1) Customers owe over ¢130m in Central Region – Water Company cries out

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has said customers in the Central Region owe a total of GHS134.3 million. This was disclosed by the Central Regional Engineer of the GWCL, Mr Thomas Amenyah at a stakeholder dialogue in Cape Coast.

According to the Central Regional Engineer of the GWCL, the cost of operations of the company was becoming expensive, as a result of the deplorable state of raw sources of water due to illegal mining activities and the high cost of chemicals. Some of the debts owed to GWCL in the region date back to four years.

2) Kpone Police impound several motorbikes in fight against criminals

The Kpone Katamanso police have impounded several motorbikes at various points in the area as part of an operation to clamp down on the activities of suspected criminals. The exercise, which was undertaken by officers from the MTTD targeted unregistered motorbikes and the illegal use of motorbikes for commercial purposes, popularly known as okada.

The Police arrested riders who were soliciting for passengers, riding without helmets, licenses, or insurance. According to the Police, the exercise was to help deal with suspected criminal activities as some motorcycles are used for crimes in the area.

3) China includes e-cigarettes to tobacco monopoly law

China’s cabinet, the State Council, on Friday issued an order amending the country’s tobacco monopoly law to include new types of tobacco products such as e-cigarettes.

The order, published on the Chinese government’s website, was written on Nov. 10, signed off by Premier Li Keqiang and comes into effect immediately.

4) Brazil’s Nuzman jailed for 30 years over Rio 2016 vote-buying

Former Rio 2016 and Brazilian Olympic Committee President Carlos Arthur Nuzman has been sentenced to 30 years and 11 months in jail for buying votes for Rio de Janeiro to host the 2016 Olympics.

The 79-year-old executive, who was the head of the Brazilian Olympic Committee for more than two decades, was found guilty of money laundering, tax evasion, corruption and criminal organization. The ruling was announced by Judge Marcelo Bretas from the 7th Criminal Court in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday

5) Europe and Asia toughen borders over fears of new COVID variant

Global authorities reacted with alarm on Friday to a new coronavirus variant detected in South Africa, with the EU and Britain among those tightening border controls as scientists sought to find out if the mutation was vaccine-resistant.

Hours after Britain banned flights from South Africa and neighbouring countries and asked travellers returning from there to quarantine, the World Health Organization (WHO) cautioned against hasty measures.
