1) Japan, Israel close borders to foreigners as WHO raises global flags over new Omicron Variant
The Omicron variant of coronavirus carries a “very high” global risk of surges, the WHO warned on Monday, as more countries reported cases, prompting border closures and reviving worries about the economic recovery from a two-year pandemic.
Scientists have said it could take weeks to understand the severity of Omicron, which was first identified in southern Africa. Its emergence has caused a strong global reaction, with countries imposing travel curbs and other restrictions, worried that it could spread fast even in vaccinated populations. No deaths linked to Omicron variant had been reported so far.
2) Ghana Immigration processing 202 African nationals for repatriation
A total of 202 African nationals arrested for unlawful entry into Ghana through unapproved routes along the Ghana-Togo border are currently being processed by the Aflao Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for repatriation.
Ninety-two of the illegal travellers were arrested on Saturday by the Defence Intelligence of the Ghana Armed Forces, Aflao while the other 110 were arrested by Aflao GIS. Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Frederick Baah Duodu, Aflao Sector Commander, said the arrest of the 92 happened at Sogakope, South Tongu District while that of the 110 was at the GIS Checkpoint at Ativuta, Ketu South.
3) Suspected militants kill soldiers in Burkina Faso’s desert north
Suspected militants killed four soldiers in Burkina Faso’s northern Loroum province on Sunday, the army said, in the latest of a wave of attacks. The assault came a day after protesters massed in the capital Ouagadougou, accusing the government of failing to stop the mounting violence.
Groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State have waged a four-year insurgency in the desert north, killing thousands of people and displacing a million. Anger has been mounting for the last two weeks, since 53 people were killed on Nov. 14 in the worst attack on security forces in years. Since then, at least 26 more soldiers and civilians have been killed in scattered attacks in the West African country.
4) Manchester United officially appoints Ralf Rangnick as interim manager
Ralf Rangnick has been appointed Manchester United interim manager until the end of the season. The 63-year-old’s contract will see him take charge of the first team until June and then remain at the club for at least a further two years in a consultancy role. United reached an agreement with Lokomotiv Moscow last week for the release of Rangnick, who was manager of sports and development at the Russian club.
He will take the reins from Michael Carrick, who was in temporary charge of the team for last week’s 2-0 Champions League win over Villarreal and Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea in the Premier League following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Rangnick told United’s website following his appointment: “I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club.
5) Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey set to step down, successor to take over
Twitter Inc Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey will step down from his role and a successor has been lined up, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The company’s board has been preparing for Dorsey’s departure since last year, the source said. The news comes as Twitter has accelerated the pace of its product innovation over the past year to compete with social media rivals such as Facebook Inc and TikTok, and to reach its goal of doubling annual revenue by 2023. Twitter was not immediately available for comment.
