Desmond Ofei remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances of advancing to the knockout stages despite an early setback in the WAFU Zone B tournament, currently taking place in Togo.
Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites, managed a crucial 2-2 draw in their opening match against Benin on Thursday. Jerry Afriyie scored first for Ghana, but Benin equalized with a header from Modeste Konoudji in the 27th minute.

Shortly before halftime, Benin took the lead, leaving Ghana trailing. However, Afriyie scored a dramatic equalizer from the penalty spot in the 92nd minute, securing a point for the Black Satellites.
In his post-match interview, head coach Desmond Ofei acknowledged that his team struggled to execute their game plan against Benin’s direct style of play.
He expressed pride in his players’ efforts to avoid defeat, stating, “It was a tough match, and the opponent had a clear plan. We found it difficult to get into our rhythm, but we did everything we could to ensure we didn’t lose.”
Despite a slow start in their bid to qualify for the 2025 U-20 AFCON, Ofei is confident that his team will improve.
“I’m very happy we found our rhythm by the end of the game. It took time to settle, but I believe the pressure is off now, and we look forward to our next match against Niger. We have top-quality players, and I’m proud of how we finished the game.”
Ghana will face Niger on Sunday, October 20, before taking on hosts Togo in their final group stage match. The team aims to return to the continent’s biggest U-20 tournament after missing out on the 2023 edition.
