The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has seized a mobile phone belonging to an invigilator, Bright Amoah, at the Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in Accra, over suspected exam malpractice.

The incident occurred on Monday, August 25, during WAEC’s routine monitoring exercise at the Burma Camp-based school, where candidates were sitting for their first major paper, Social Studies.

According to WAEC officials, the device contained already-solved questions from the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), including material from the Oral English and Picture Making papers. Although these subjects had already been written, the Council suspects potential foul play and has taken custody of the phone for further investigation.

WAEC has since directed the Examination Centre Supervisor to submit a detailed report on why the invigilator was in possession of a mobile phone inside the examination hall, a direct violation of WAEC’s regulations.

The Council has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for malpractice and assured the public of strict enforcement of its rules to safeguard the credibility of the examinations.
