The Water Research Institute of the CSIR has advised individuals living in and around the Keta Basin to refrain from consuming groundwater.

This warning is in response to contamination resulting from the Akosombo Dam spillage, which is anticipated to settle within the Acrifa system, making it unsuitable for human use.

Speaking at this year’s Open Day seminar organized by The Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific Research Institute (CSIR) on the topic of groundwater availability, quality, and sustainable use, Principal water research scientist, Dr. William Agyekum, said, “The Keta basin has three main aquifer systems.

The upper one contains very fresh water to a depth of twelve meters, and with this spillage and contamination, it will affect the upper fresh groundwater.”

He further explained, “The upper aquifer always contains fresh water. By the time the contamination might have seeped through the system into the second aquifer, I would only advise they use water from the upper aquifer, which always contains fresh water, and take their time and give it a month for the water to seep through so that fresh water comes out before they can consume,” he added.
