Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has addressed criticism regarding his emphasis on digitalisation, responding to claims that he has neglected discussions on Ghana’s economic issues.

Bawumia, a long-time advocate for using digital initiatives to drive economic transformation, clarified that his focus on digitalisation is not a departure from addressing economic concerns but rather a comprehensive solution to key challenges facing the country.

His remarks come amidst criticism from political opponents, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, who have accused Bawumia of sidestepping important economic discussions ahead of the 2024 elections.

Speaking at the launch of the National Credit Scoring System, a project aimed at improving access to credit for Ghanaians, Bawumia stressed that digitalisation efforts are closely linked to the overall health of the economy.

The credit scoring system, which will allow financial institutions to assess creditworthiness using digital data, is just one part of his broader digital transformation agenda.

Bawumia explained that modernising the Ghanaian economy through digital tools is vital in tackling systemic economic challenges such as access to financial services, transparency, and inclusion.

He reiterated that his vision for a digitized economy is not solely about technological progress but about creating a system that fosters quicker, fairer, and more efficient economic transactions across various sectors.

As an example of how digitalisation benefits the economy, Bawumia highlighted the successful implementation of mobile money interoperability, which allows users to transfer funds across different mobile networks.

This initiative has been widely credited with enhancing financial inclusion in Ghana.
