The Ghana Police Service has denied allegations that it refused medical care to Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent member of the Democracy Hub, who was arrested on Monday during the group’s protests.

In a statement, the Police clarified that Barker-Vormawor was admitted to the Police Hospital after reporting health issues. They explained that he and another group member, Fanny Otoo, were transferred to the hospital for medical care after both complained of feeling unwell.

The statement detailed that “Suspect Fanny Otoo, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, informed the Police that he was unwell while the suspects were being prepared for court.

The Police then sent him to the Police Hospital in Accra, where he was treated and later admitted for further care.”

It further noted that “Suspect Oliver Barker-Vormawor was also taken to the Police Hospital for medical attention after reporting illness late on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. He was assessed by doctors and subsequently admitted for treatment.”

The Police emphasized that they had never denied medical attention to Barker-Vormawor or any other suspects in custody, addressing concerns about their well-being.

“The Police would like to inform the public that at no time have they denied these suspects any medical attention,” the statement reiterated.
