The Ghana Police Service has rejected claims that it has banned the pressure group Democracy Hub from holding its planned demonstration.

The police clarified that they have only asked the group to reconsider their protest location, referencing a court order that prohibits demonstrations at Revolution Square from September 21 to 23, 2024. This decision aims to prevent potential disruptions to public order.

In a statement on September 19, 2024, Director of Police Public Affairs ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi noted that while the protest cannot occur at Revolution Square, there are alternative locations available.

She encouraged organizers to consult with the police to discuss these options.

“The Ghana Police Service throughout its engagement with the Democracy Hub assured them of the readiness of the police to provide the necessary security for the planned protest.

“For emphasis, we wish to state categorically, that the Ghana Police Service has not stopped Democracy Hub from embarking on the planned protest. The only disagreement is on their choice of the Revolution Square, in front of the Jubilee House as the location for the protest.

“The service has put in place sufficient measures to provide security for the exercise from September 21-23, 2024 when a new location is agreed between the organisers and the police,” part of the statement read.
