Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections, has recognized the challenges of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy but assured that these issues will be addressed with resolve and practical solutions.

Speaking at the University of Memphis in the United States on Friday, October 18, Dr. Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, reiterated the NPP’s strong commitment to improving the Free SHS policy, ensuring that it continues to provide equal educational opportunities for all Ghanaian students.

NAPO emphasized the marked improvements in student performance in core subjects over the past five years, attributing this success to the Free SHS program.

He highlighted how the initiative has boosted educational outcomes and expanded access to quality education.

“We don’t deny that challenges exist—they certainly do. But we will face them with boldness and transparency. No challenge is beyond resolution,” he stated.

NAPO also stressed the significance of the 30% equity policy, which allocates spots in top-tier senior high schools for students from public basic schools in underprivileged areas, fostering inclusivity and closing the gap between urban and rural education.

He reaffirmed the NPP’s vision to eliminate all barriers to education, ensuring that every young Ghanaian’s educational journey is based on their abilities, not financial constraints, gender, or location.

“We will keep removing barriers to education at all levels, ensuring that every young Ghanaian’s educational journey is determined by their abilities, not the financial circumstances of their family, not their gender, not their location.

“We believe education must provide every Ghanaian child with open opportunities and a fair start in life, especially as we seek to participate actively in the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he stated.
