Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has announced that his administration will reinstate the election of MMDCEs through universal adult suffrage to enhance decentralization and improve local governance.

During the NPP manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia outlined plans to separate the creation of Districts from Constituencies to prevent automatic increases in Parliament’s size.
He also proposed establishing an Electoral Area Share of the Common Fund (EASCF) to support Assembly Members in driving local development.
Additionally, he committed to working with Parliament, political parties, and other stakeholders to review the 1992 Constitution to promote effective national development.
“Provide values-based leadership, predicated on values such as selflessness, excellence, ethics, justice, integrity, transparency, diligence, and accountability.”
“…Review Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act to empower Chiefs to strengthen local governance. Pay living allowances to Paramount Chiefs, Divisional Chiefs, and Queen mothers,” he further noted.
