Rev. Fr. Nicholas Nibetol Aazine, President of Just Peace and Integrity of Creation, has reaffirmed that the battle against illegal mining, known as galamsey, is far from over.

He emphasized the Church’s commitment to renewing its efforts and amplifying calls to end the destructive practice that has severely harmed Ghana’s environment.

On Friday, October 11, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra organized a Prayer Protest Walk against galamsey.

The event attracted hundreds of participants, mainly Catholic Church members, alongside the Graduate Student Association of Ghana (GRASAG) and other concerned citizens.

The peaceful demonstration aimed to raise awareness about the devastating effects of galamsey and urged the government to intensify its efforts to eliminate the illegal mining threat.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, October 11, Father Nicholas highlighted that galamsey continues to pose a major risk to the country’s natural resources.

He assured that the Church, in collaboration with its partners, will persist in leading peaceful protests and advocacy until the government takes decisive action to resolve the issue.

“We will rally again and this time around, probably, we will go to the grassroots to talk to the youth and the chiefs in the area as the government is also doing its bit. This is not a fight or a work just for the government, it’s for all of us.

“Because when something happens which is not good, it affects all of us. So, that is something that we have yet to do. We are yet to meet or come together again and then find solutions, maybe involve priests around areas where they are doing galamsey or the people there. We need to also do sensitisation,” he stated.
