The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has strongly condemned recent separate incidents of assault on its officers while they were performing their duties.

A viral video circulating on social media on September 3 shows a firefighter, ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor, being attacked by a commercial driver and his mate while refilling a fire truck at La Palm T-Junction in Accra.
In a statement released on September 10, the GNFS revealed that the injured officer sustained a fractured ankle and is scheduled for surgery this week at the 37 Military Hospital.
The press release further mentioned that the suspects involved in the assault have been arrested and were granted bail, with each required to provide sureties of GH₵5,000. They are expected to reappear in court on October 24, 2024.
On September 5, another incident was reported in Dansoman, where residents at the roundabout physically and verbally assaulted firefighters while they were on duty.
According to the GNFS release, the conflict arose when the fire truck temporarily left to replenish its water supply. Despite the attack, the firefighters, with the support of two additional trucks, were able to extinguish the fire and prevent further damage to nearby properties.
The GNFS stated that the incidents have been reported to the police for further investigations.
The Service also issued a warning to the general public, urging them to refrain from assaulting its officers, as such actions are illegal and will be met with strict legal consequences.
“The GNFS reminds the public that assaulting firefighters is unlawful and will be met with strict legal action. Our personnel risk their lives daily to protect citizens and property, and they deserve the respect and support from the public.
“Management of GNFS is committed to providing the best care for the injured officer and will pursue legal action to ensure justice for all affected personnel.
“Management by this statement is cautioning the general public that it shall defend its personnel performing their lawful duties at all times and fight culprits of firefighter assaults with all its might under the law,” the statement added.
