The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ahafo Ano South West has expressed its unwavering determination to protect its parliamentary seat after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed a legal challenge.
The NDC has approached the High Court in Kumasi to contest the election of Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah as the Member of Parliament for the constituency, following a re-collation of results by the Electoral Commission (EC) due to discrepancies in the initial tally.
This legal challenge is not limited to Ahafo Ano South West, as the NDC has also filed similar cases in the Obuasi East and Ahafo Ano North constituencies.
The NDC argues that disturbances marred the elections in these areas and that the EC’s recounts unjustly overturned results in favor of the NPP candidates.
Eric Owura Agyekum, the NPP’s Deputy Secretary for Ahafo Ano South West, has dismissed the NDC’s claims, stating that the NPP won the seat fairly.
He further encouraged party supporters to remain steadfast as the NPP works to uphold the electoral victory.
“The NPP lost the presidential election to the NDC by some 489 votes difference and we have accepted it without resorting to violence. It is therefore instructive for the good people of the Ahafo Ano South West, particularly the NDC to note that for the parliamentary election, the NPP’s Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah won with 686 votes, which we normally refer to as skirt and blouse.
“Let me further proceed to give you some polling stations that voted for the NDC in the presidential but voted the NPP in the parliamentary which reaffirms our assertion of the people having voted skirt and blouse.”
