The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has downplayed concerns about competition following the introduction of electric buses, which offer reduced fares as part of their launch in the country.

The newly introduced electric buses, aimed at modernizing Ghana’s transport system, promise to reduce public transport costs by 40 to 50 percent while providing an eco-friendly mobility alternative.
On November 27, 2024, the government unveiled an initial fleet of 100 electric buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT).
Despite the shift towards electric vehicles (EV), GPRTU remains confident in the resilience and continued relevance of its operations. Abass Imoro, the union’s Industrial Relations Officer, expressed optimism about the union’s future in the transport sector.
However, energy sector stakeholders have called for caution regarding the swift rollout of the electric vehicle system.
Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy, raised concerns about the pace of implementation and potential challenges in transitioning to EV-based public transport.
