Wontumi TV, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako , the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Chairman Wontumi — has issued an unreserved apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public. The apology follows comments by one of its presenters linking the President to the recent tragic military helicopter crash.
The presenter, Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, alleged on-air that President Mahama was involved in the incident.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Wontumi TV’s management described the remarks, made during a broadcast on Saturday, August 9, as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.” The station emphasised that the claims did not reflect its editorial stance or policies and were made without evidence.
“As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational damage this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the statement read.
The management also pledged to take disciplinary action against the presenter and announced that editorial guidelines had been reinforced to ensure all on-air content is based solely on verified facts and credible sources.
This development comes in the wake of the National Communications Authority (NCA) suspending three radio stations under Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited — 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi. The NCA cited repeated regulatory violations, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and broadcasting from unapproved transmitter sites.
The suspensions followed the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President Mahama for defaulting stations to address the breaches.
