After an attack by angry labourers, contractors from Japanese construction firm Shimizu Dai Nippon Joint Ventures suspended the work on the National Trunk Road N8 that runs from Assin Fosu and Assin Praso.

According to reports, the anger of the workers was out of solidarity with a colleague whose contract expired and was asked to leave the company.

The workers began a two-day sit-down strike, after which they gathered and marched to the Japanese contractors’ residence.

They are alleged to have jumped the wall, forcibly entered the room of one contractor (named Gozwe), and dragged him out of his bedroom before harassing him.

Eric Mensah is the Chairman of the Municipal Works Department of Assin Fosu. He narrates the story to Kwame Owusu Asante, Angel News reporter. He stated that the workers believed Gozwe was responsible for the dismissal of their colleague at the end of his contract.

He also stated that the victim was injured in the attack.

The Chairman pointed out that the attack had infuriated Shimizu Dai Nippon Joint Ventures, and ordered it to stop all activities related to road construction.

The managers of the construction company reiterated their commitment to pay the employees three months’ salary and fire them from their positions because they can no longer work with them, according to the Municipal Works Department Of Assin Fosu Mr. Mensah.

He used the medium to address the angered workers and stressed that the Municipal Assembly would be expected to hear the matter on Monday, January 17th 2022. They will also be expected to bring the perpetrators into court since their approach was illegal.

Chief Superintendent Cephas Cephas Arthur, District Commander for Assin Fosu confirmed the incident. He said that police immediately intervened in order to avoid further breakdown of law.

Chief Supt. Cephas Arthur reminded workers to follow the law and use appropriate channels to voice their dissatisfaction. If they anyone is found guilty, they would not be forgiven.
