Efforts are underway to retrieve the remaining bodies following a tragic boat capsize on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji–Congo route.

The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, reportedly overturned due to bad weather.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, earlier told Joy News that nine persons drowned in the accident.

However, the GMA says seven of the nine bodies have so far been recovered, with search efforts ongoing to retrieve the remaining two victims—a woman and a child.

According to the Authority, rescue teams are working diligently to locate the missing bodies, although conditions on the water continue to pose challenges.

The exact cause of the capsize is yet to be fully established, but authorities say investigations are underway.Explainers on current affairs
