Kumasi drowns in filth as Oti landfill breakdown disrupts waste collection

Heaps of uncollected refuse have been left in several homes and on streets across Kumasi following a breakdown of machines at the Oti Landfill Site.

Tricycle waste operators who collect the refuse are unable to do so because they have been stranded at the landfill site for days, as they cannot offload the refuse.

The situation has left residents with no option but to keep the refuse at the entrances of their homes as they wait for the waste collectors.

Residents say the situation is having a serious impact on their daily lives and fear this could pose serious health risks.

Some residents said that their refuse has been uncollected for close to a week.

With the waste accumulating, many households are worried about the health and environmental risks, especially with the rains.

The affected residents are therefore appealing to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and other authorities to urgently address the challenges at the Oti Landfill Site to restore normal waste collection.
