Sunyani West: Public Accounts Committee directs refund of GH¢116k in illegal staff payments

The Public Accounts Committee has directed the Sunyani West Municipal Assembly to refund a total of GH¢ 116,000 after it was cited for the illegal transfer of public funds as end-of-service benefits to some staff.

The issue came to light during the Committee’s ongoing sittings on the Auditor-General’s report on Tuesday, April 21, where the Assembly admitted to transferring 135,000 Ghana Cedis for the said purpose without the required legal backing.

Officials of the Assembly, who appeared before the Committee, disclosed that 19,000 Ghana Cedis has already been refunded, leaving an outstanding balance of 116,000 Ghana Cedis.

Unsatisfied with the breach, the Committee ordered that the remaining amount be paid within 30 days, warning that failure to comply could attract further sanctions.

“Respectfully, within 30 days we want the monies paid and the receipt given to the regional representative of the Audit Service, with a copy sent to the Public Accounts Committee,” Abena Osei Asare, Chairperson for the Public Accounts Committee, demanded
