The Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has donated cash and relief supplies to victims whose buildings collapsed following a tidal wave disaster in Moree.
The strong tidal wave destroyed 13 houses in the coastal community of Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, leaving more than 80 residents displaced.
The Central Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 17, at about 3:00 a.m.
In the meantime, the MP said the affected residents would continue to stay with relatives while the government provides them with relief items.
Mr Ofosu Kwakye made the donation during a tour of the disaster area, announcing that the victims will be duly compensated.
“I decided to come quickly to assess the situation myself. And I can say that the information that reached me is accurate. Thankfully, there was no loss of life, and there were no injuries. And we thank God for that.
“The affected individuals are in distress; fortunately, we have been able to arrange with their relatives and loved ones, who have agreed to live with them temporarily.
He added, “They are sheltered and not exposed to the weather. I have been able to mobilise some relief items for them, including maize, beans, cooking oil, mattresses, dresses, blankets, buckets, soaps, etc. The affected victims are catered for. We need to move a step further to resettle them. In due course, we should assist them and move them out of danger.”
He further warned against illegal sand mining activities along the coast, describing them as a major contributor to the situation.
Meanwhile, authorities say efforts are underway to expedite the construction of sea defence mechanisms to protect the community from future tidal waves.
