The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has converged at the Independence Square in Accra to stage a protest over the continued unemployment of qualified teachers from the 2022 batch.
The demonstration, which forms part of the association’s ongoing demands for the restoration of the automatic posting policy, is expected to begin at Independence Square, proceed to the Jubilee House, and end at the Ministry of Finance.
The protest comes amid TTAG’s strong criticism of the government’s recent recruitment of 7,000 teachers, which the association describes as insufficient to address the large number of trained but unemployed graduates.
According to TTAG, the recruitment exercise by the Ministry of Education does not reflect the scale of the problem, as thousands of trained teachers remain at home without postings despite completing their training.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Friday April 24, the Secretary of TTAG, Jonathan Kwadzo Agorkpo, expressed frustration over what he described as delays and lack of progress in resolving their concerns.
“They are saying the system is working, but we are not seeing any result that shows that the system is working. The government needs to help us. He should give us what he promised us,” he said.
TTAG’s position aligns with earlier remarks by its leadership, who have warned that more than 45,000 trained teachers are still awaiting posting, while over 65,000 students are currently enrolled in Colleges of Education.
The association insists that if the government is unable to absorb the backlog of trained teachers, then it must reconsider the sustainability of the Colleges of Education system.
