The Ministry of Finance has approved the payment of salary arrears owed to staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), clearing the way for thousands of teachers to receive several months of outstanding wages.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 20, GES Management said the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has been authorised to begin disbursing the arrears to eligible staff. The payments cover the period from August 2024 to November 2025.
“The directive follows an official communication referenced BO/CPMU/MoE/2024/FC. Arrears/26/04 from the Ministry of Finance, which outlined the approval framework for settling the accumulated salary obligations,” the statement said.
GES indicated that the arrears will be paid in four instalments to ease the financial burden on the state while ensuring gradual settlement.
Under the arrangement, beneficiaries will receive four months’ worth of arrears in each tranche. Payments are scheduled to begin in May, with subsequent instalments to be made in June, July, and August.
The approval is expected to bring relief to affected GES staff who have waited months for their salaries. It also reflects government efforts to regularise payroll obligations in the education sector while managing broader public sector wage commitments.
