Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, expressed deep concerns about the state of Ghana’s democracy during his address at the 15th MTN Pulse Africa Transform Summit in Kumasi.

He highlighted the troubling trend of ‘monecracy’ overshadowing democratic principles such as fair representation and equal opportunity in Ghana’s political landscape.
Iddrisu critiqued the growing influence of money in electoral processes and lamented its negative impact.
Discussing the flaws in the Affirmative Action Bill, he candidly acknowledged his own involvement in the system he now criticizes.
Urging the youth to resist this trend, he emphasized the importance of speaking out against the dominance of financial resources in politics.
Reflecting on past electoral practices, Iddrisu recalled a time when campaigns centered more on ideas and public service commitment rather than financial prowess.
He encouraged younger generations to advocate for a return to these values, emphasizing that the current focus on financial influence has distorted democratic norms.
“In essence, our democracy has regrettably become a ‘monecracy’, where the highest bidder often gains favor,” he lamented, urging a collective effort to restore integrity and fairness in Ghanaian politics.
