Ghana and Kenya are strengthening their bilateral ties through trade and tourism, with Kenya Airways considering direct flights to the revamped Kumasi International Airport.

The airport, located in Ghana’s second-largest city, has undergone significant upgrades, including a modern terminal building capable of handling over 800,000 passengers annually.

According to OEC data, Ghana exported $5.46 million worth of goods to Kenya in 2022, primarily coconut oil, cocoa powder, and live plants. Kenya, on the other hand, exported $9.53 million worth of goods to Ghana, mainly coconut and vegetable fibers, tea, and aluminum plating.

Tourism is also on the rise, with a long-standing visa waiver agreement and attractions in both countries fueling a growing two-way flow of tourists.

Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka expressed interest in operating flights to Kumasi, citing its viability and commercial potential.

The airport’s modern facilities, including passenger processing installations and navigation aids, make it an attractive destination.

Jet A1 fuel is also available, and the runway, currently 1,994m long, can support A319, A320, and Boeing 737 operations. Plans are underway to extend the runway to 2,300m, enabling larger aircraft to operate.

Kilavuka emphasized that operating flights to Kumasi is not a question of if, but how, and Kenya Airways will explore frequencies and commercial viability. This development is expected to further boost trade and tourism between the two nations.
