Bawah Abdul-Mugis, a Communications graduate from the University for Development Studies (UDS), was awarded the first-ever Anas Aremeyaw Anas Investigative Journalism Excellence Award at UDS’s 25th graduation ceremony in Tamale.

This prestigious award, created by celebrated journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, aims to support and celebrate outstanding journalism talent emerging from Northern Ghana.

Abdul-Mugis received GHS 2,000, a plaque, and a citation certificate. The award’s first runner-up, Asana Saani, was presented with GHS 1,000 and a citation, while the second runner-up spot, shared by Nimatu Abdul-Razak and Joel Laboarileed Duut, awarded each of them GHS 1,000 and a citation certificate.

Anas’s investigative firm, Tiger Eye PI, is sponsoring the award for the next 12 years to foster and encourage investigative journalism across Northern Ghana.

The initiative goes beyond financial support; Anas has partnered with international media organizations like the BBC and CNN to donate radio and television equipment to UDS, enriching the hands-on training opportunities for students in journalism.

In a post-ceremony interview, Dr. Mahama Seth Sayibu, head of UDS’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies, praised Anas and Tiger Eye PI for their dedication to nurturing investigative journalism.

Dr. Sayibu expressed the department’s eagerness for future partnerships, including faculty training workshops with overseas experts to build capacity in investigative reporting and offer students a globally competitive edge.

This award and the additional resources signal a commitment to advancing quality journalism and empowering the next generation of investigative reporters in Ghana.
