The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is expected to appear before a court in the Netherlands within the next 48 hours following his arrest at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The MP was arrested on Sunday, May 8, over allegations of money laundering and involvement in romance scam-related offences.
sources close to his legal team indicate that he is expected to challenge the legality of his arrest and subsequent detention when he appears in court.
The MP’s arrest was first confirmed in a statement from the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, which said Parliament had been formally informed and is engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague for further details.
The statement added that the Speaker of Parliament and leadership are in close contact with the mission to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP for Asante Akim North.
Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured that the lawmaker is safe, stable, and has not suffered any harm while in detention.
