Ghana’s economy expanded by 4.7% year-on-year in April 2026, with the services sector remaining the biggest driver of growth despite a slower pace compared to the same period last year, according to the Ghana Statistical Service’s Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG).
The April growth rate was lower than the 7.4% recorded in April 2025, signalling a moderation in economic activity even as the economy maintained its upward trajectory. The MIEG index rose to 113.3 from 108.2 a year earlier.
The services sector recorded a 6.0% expansion and accounted for 61.7% of overall economic growth, driven largely by the Information and Communication subsector.
Although growth slowed from the 15.1% recorded a year earlier, services remained the largest contributor to the economy’s expansion.
Industry grew by 4.0%, up from 1.1% in April 2025, supported mainly by increased mining activity. The sector contributed 29.9% of the overall growth recorded during the month.
Agriculture rebounded from a 6.9% contraction in April last year to post 1.7% growth, driven primarily by crop and livestock production. The sector contributed 4.5% to overall economic growth.
The Ghana Statistical Service said the April figures are provisional and serve as an early indicator of quarterly GDP trends. The MIEG is designed to provide timely insights into the direction of the economy ahead of the release of official quarterly GDP data.
