Residents in parts of the Weija enclave are counting their losses after a controlled spillage from the Weija Dam triggered flooding downstream, submerging homes, disrupting livelihoods, and forcing some families to relocate.
The spillage, which forms part of routine dam water management operations, has nonetheless raised fresh concerns among affected communities, who say the scale and impact of the flooding have left them vulnerable.
In several areas, access roads were rendered impassable, while homes, shops, and small businesses were inundated.
Residents are calling for improved drainage systems and stronger flood mitigation measures to reduce the recurring impact of such releases during periods of heavy rainfall.
